Shopping for health information? Try CHEC

10/23/2009

Before we know it, the holiday season will be upon us, with shopping lists for Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas gifts. Often, our health takes a back seat to busy schedules and to-do lists.

While you are out and about, take a few minutes to shop for health information by visiting the Community Health Education Center (CHEC) located just inside the main rear entrance to Biggs Park Mall in Lumberton.

CHEC offers free consumer health information to all citizens of Robeson and surrounding counties.  This information is available in a wide variety of formats – pamphlets (including Spanish), books, videos, and Web sites.

“We are featuring an American Institute for Cancer Research brochure series on healthy eating called The New American Plate, which includes easy-to-prepare recipes,” said CHEC Manager Carole Gavaghan. “Many basic, health-related pamphlets are available, but we continue to add new literature for people who visit frequently.”

The consumer health library, which celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year, is operated by Southeastern Regional Medical Center in cooperation with the Robeson County Public Library. Borrowers may use their Robeson County Public Library card to check out information, and a personal computer is available to access health information sites on the Internet.

A self-monitored blood pressure machine, which includes optional weight and body mass index checks, is available for use free of charge.

Resources are also available for those interested in compiling their own health information collections for churches, civic groups or special events.

“Electronic health information files are available for download to a CD or thumb drive for on-demand printing. We also offer a source list for ordering limited quantities of free health information, such as brochures and pamphlets,” said Gavaghan.

CHEC assistants will help you research the health information you need.  The center is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (910) 671-9393.

Other health information resources available through Southeastern Regional Medical Center include a mini, self-guided CHEC center located in the Southeastern Lifestyle Center of Red Springs as well as an Information Resource Center on the hospital’s main campus.
