Red Dress event spotlights heart disease in women
1/29/2010
Rescheduled to: Tuesday, March 2, 5:30 pm, Pinecrest Country Club
Heart disease in women
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), cardiovascular disease kills approximately 450,000 women each year–about one every minute–yet only one in five women view heart disease as their greatest health threat.
Other alarming heart health statistics from the AHA include:
§ About one in three women die from cardiovascular disease, which is largely preventable.
§ Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
§ More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
Awareness event
Women throughout the region are invited to learn more about heart disease at an event hosted by Southeastern Heart Center which is managed by Duke University Health System and located on the campus of Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Take it to Heart: A Red Dress Luncheon will be held at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The event will include an opportunity for individuals to participate in a variety of free health screens from 9 - 10 a.m. Following the screenings, participants are invited to attend a fashion show, program and heart-healthy luncheon at a cost of $5.
The fashion show will feature former patients of Southeastern Heart Center who will be modeling red dress fashions from JC Penny of Lumberton.
Featured speakers at the event will include Certified Physician Assistant Catherine Gaines of Southeastern Heart Center/Duke Cardiovascular Surgery of Lumberton and Southeastern Weight Loss Center Medical Director and General Surgeon Dr. Barry Williamson. Dr. Williamson is in private practice with Lumberton Surgical Associates of Lumberton.
