Dr. Cummings graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University Medical School. He practiced medicine with the Pinehurst Surgical Clinic and Moore Regional Hospital for 10 years, where he chaired the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. After leaving his surgical practice, he remained active with the hospital, serving on the Moore Regional Hospital Board of Trustees and chairing the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Cummings transitioned to work in government, first as medical director for Community Care of the Sandhills and then as health director of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

A former chairman of the UNCP Board of Trustees, Dr. Cummings also chaired the UNCP Foundation Board, and served on the UNC Chapel Hill Board of Visitors. The founding chair of the N.C. American Indian Health Board, he has chaired the Commission on N.C. Indian Health and served on the N.C. Council on Developmental Disabilities and the N.C. Rural Center Board. He has been honored with the Presidential Award from the N.C. Academy of Family Physicians and the Visionary Award from N.C. Prevent Blindness.

He and his wife, Rebecca, also a Pembroke native, currently reside in Pembroke and have four children: Amy, Mark, David and Adam.

A native of Robeson County, Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UNC Chapel Hill and a juris doctor degree from the UNC School of Law in 1994.  She is a principal partner with the law firm of Huggins, Pounds and Davis.
