Dr. Gerber honored with philanthropy award

Retired Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Dixon Gerber was presented with the Southeastern Health Foundation's Bob B. Andrews Friend of Philanthropy Award during an event held December 9 at the Holiday Inn in Lumberton.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Gerber earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio State University. After four years of service as an officer in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Ohio and received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1974. He completed an internship in general surgery and his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Cincinnati General Hospital.

Prior to moving to Lumberton in 1991, he practiced for 12 years with a multi-specialty clinic in northern Michigan. During his 21 years of practice in Lumberton, he provided care at The Orthopaedic Center, an affiliate of Southeastern Health. Before that, he practiced with Robeson Orthopaedic Center and Coastal Plain Orthopedic Clinic, respectively. He made his retirement official in 2012.

Dr. Gerber has been a loyal supporter of SeHealth and its programs, having supported funding projects for the Southeastern Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Bed Tower, Gibson Cancer Center and Emergency Services projects as well as numerous other special projects. He also served on the SeHealth Foundation Board from 2000-2006.

In the nomination submission for this honor, Dr. Gerber was commended for his compassion, caring, honesty and generosity as a teacher. He was highly praised for going beyond his duties to check on patients that were transferred to other facilities to ensure they were thriving as well as treating patients in nursing homes when they were too sick to travel to his office.

According to Sissy Grantham, executive director of the SeHealth Foundation, after his retirement, Dr. Gerber worked with the SeHealth Foundation to establish the Dr. Dixon W. Gerber Patient Emergency Fund to assist travelers and other patients that find themselves in a medical crisis and need support.

He lives in Lumberton with his wife, Elizabeth. They have three grown children and 10 grandchildren.

Previous winners of the SeHealth Foundation's Friend of Philanthropy Award include Dr. Bob B. Andrews, whom the award was named after, Dr. D.E. Ward, Jr. and Dr. John Rozier.
