Coalition gets new name

The Robeson County Substance Abuse Coalition has recently renamed their group the Substance Misuse Awareness and Recovery Taskforce, The taskforce has been busy gathering information from the community through roundtable forums with medical providers, law enforcement/emergency services as well as behavioral health professionals. A roundtable event for all of the groups combined will be held September 7.

“The main purpose of these listening events is open conversation to discuss how each sector is impacted by substance misuse in Robeson County, discuss their responsibilities in the issue, and outline steps forward,” said Southeastern Health Community Mobilization Coordinator May Lample, who is based in SeHealth’s Community Health Services department. “For our provider roundtable, we focused on registration and usage of the Controlled Substances Reporting System, communication between pharmacists and doctors, and provider education. For the law enforcement and EMS professionals, we discussed Narcan training and medication drop boxes. When meeting with the behavioral health professionals, we focused on systemic barriers and improved communication.”

During the month of September, which is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, Substance Misuse Awareness and Recovery Taskforce is encouraging everyone throughout the county–individuals, businesses and schools–to participate in “Paint the Town Purple” as purple is the color which represents substance abuse awareness.

“This color emphasis will remind us all of the impact of substance abuse on every aspect of our community as we go through our daily routines,” added Lample.
