It’s that time again for the Rumba on the Lumber and the Family Fun Mile, sponsored by Southeastern Regional Medical Center (SRMC) and Community Health Services’ Project H.E.A.L.T.H. (Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles for Tomorrow’s Health).
This annual event, which will be held in downtown Lumberton on Saturday, March 3, draws individuals and families from Robeson and surrounding counties and offers a little bit of fun for everyone. Last year, over 1,000 adults and children participated in the SRMC Family Fun Mile and this year, to make it easier to participate, registration will be held on the day of the event from 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. at the building formerly known as Black Water Grille in downtown Lumberton. The SRMC Family Fun Mile starts at 10 a.m. so don’t be late!
The first 300 kindergarten through eighth-grade participants to register will receive a FREE T-shirt and bib number. Those who cross the finish line will receive a medal and a bottled water to quench their thirst. To stay healthy and energetic, your child's body needs plenty of healthy fluids every day. Water is a perfect choice, since it hydrates without adding unnecessary calories like from sodas or other sweetened beverages.
Mascot favorites, Rocky the Bear from Southeastern Regional Medical Center and Kidsville’s Truman, will again be making their way through the crowds, shaking hands and getting participants excited about the fun mile challenge. This is a great way to spend time with family and friends, be physically active and have FUN!
To add a little more excitement to this year’s event, a Bike for Family Fun Ride will be held after the SRMC Family Fun Mile. The ride starts at 10:30 a.m. at the same location (on Chestnut Street) and follows the same one-mile course as the fun mile. For the energetic rider, a 20-mile bike ride starts at 12:30 p.m. on Chestnut Street, heads out to the county line, and back to the Robeson County Library on Chestnut Street. We hope you will get moving and join us in these FREE events. (In order to participate, helmets are required!)
Don’t forget to check out other Rumba on the Lumber festivities, including the Allen Orthopedics Friday Night Party at the Bill Sapp Center from 6-9 p.m. on March 2 (Kids' activities at this event will be provided by Exploration Station); the North of the Border Chili Cook-off; the Lumbee River EMC Kidz Zone; and, of course, the LRA 5K. Proceeds from these events will benefit the United Way of Robeson County, the Lumberton Football Association, and the Lumber River Soccer Association.
