Your ankle is a complex weight-bearing joint where three bones come together. It is stabilized by and supported by three groups of ligaments. Muscles and tendons move the foot and ankle. Sprained ankles are one of the most common injuries in sports. Excessive training, such as running long distances without rest, can place repeated stress on the ankle and foot which can result in stress fractures and muscle/tendon strains.
The pain of a sprain is sometimes described as an intense dull ache that occurs upon weight bearing and ankle motion. It is very common for ankle pain can be accompanied by swelling, stiffness, redness, and warmth. Ankle pain is frequently due to an ankle sprain but can also be caused by gout, arthritis, fracture, and/or nerve compression.
Our physical and occupational therapists make every effort to provide the best treatment and care for ankle pain and strains. The RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) method is a treatment for sprains. Reducing swelling and resting the ankle can aid in healing the injury. For more aggressive rehabilitation, stretching, and activity can help. Heat therapy warms the muscles which can increase range of motion and allows for a safer stretch.
