Owned and operated by Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Gibson Cancer Center is the only outpatient cancer treatment facility in Robeson County. Established in 1995 as the Southeastern Cancer Center, the name was changed in 2002 to honor Alice and Monroe Carr Gibson, two Robeson County citizens dedicated to the cancer patients of this region.
Prior to its inception, cancer services in Robeson County were provided by late Dr. David Richardson and the caring staff of Lumberton Medical Clinic in conjunction with Duke Medicine. Outside of the care provided by Dr. Richardson, our “ friends and neighbors ” routinely had to seek cancer treatment 30 minutes to two hours away in other communities . Gibson’s construction made outpatient cancer treatment more convenient for our community. Affiliations with Duke Medicine and Southeastern Radiation Oncology brought world class clinical care to Gibson Cancer Center; and accreditation by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer ensured that care was on par with the best community cancer programs in the country.
At the dedication of Gibson Cancer Center, the Chairman of SRMC’s Board of Trustees spoke the following words:
Since 1995, Gibson Cancer Center has grown immensely and continues to provide outstanding care to the patients of Robeson and surrounding counties. Offering radiation oncology, medical oncology, and blood disorder treatments, Gibson Cancer Center is dedicated to its community and its citizens.
