Southeastern Health (SeHealth) embarked on the development of a cancer program in 1995 in collaboration with Duke University Health System, with the goal of improving cancer care for people in the region. SRMC initiated its program through a Duke clinical affiliation in medical oncology, with Duke physicians and advanced practice providers caring for patients with cancer and blood disorders at SeHealth’s Gibson Cancer Center (GCC). Today, patients can see a Duke-affiliated cancer specialist, receive needed chemotherapies, biotherapies, and transfusions, and receive quality care close to home.
As a member of the Duke Oncology Network, Southeastern also offers access to cutting-edge clinical trials for its patients, collaborative conferences and educational offerings for medical professionals, and a supportive network of resources to assist both physicians and their patients through the continuum of care.
Several Duke clinicians are currently based in Lumberton at GCC, including Drs. Ahmad Mahmood, Maleka Ahmed, and Physician Assistant Maribeth Schrum. The efforts of these specialists in hematology and medical oncology are supported by subspecialty expertise in breast and lung cancer by Drs. Linda Sutton and Marvaretta Stevenson, respectively.
A multidisciplinary team, including a Duke cardiothoracic surgeon, participates in a virtual, web-based Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Conference, which facilitates collaboration in patient care. GCC also supports a full-time research nurse to coordinate patient participation in clinical trials.
This successful collaboration highlights the joint commitment of Southeastern Health Center and the Duke Oncology Network to offer high-quality, patient-centered cancer care to residents of the region.
