What is hospice?

Hospice, in the earliest days, was a concept rooted in the centuries-old idea of offering a place of shelter and rest, or "hospitality" to weary and sick travelers on a long journey. Today, hospice care provides humane and compassionate care for people in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. The hospice philosophy accepts death as the final stage of life. Our goal is to enable patients to continue an alert, pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so that their last days may be spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice affirms life and does not hasten or postpone death. Hospice care treats the person rather than the disease; it focuses on quality rather than length of life. It provides family-centered care and involves the patient and the family in making decisions. Hospice care can be given in the patient's home, nursing home, or in patient hospice facility.

What is a hospice house?

A hospice house is a place where terminally ill people go when they are interested in physical and emotional comfort rather than potentially heroic efforts to cure. It is designed to resemble a home, and the staff provides the caregiver tasks that allow patient, family and friends to spend more time together.

Are there other reasons patients are admitted?

  • Pain or symptom crisis that requires close medical observation and medicinal management
  • Respite for caregivers

How do patients pay for treatment?

In-patient care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance. Respite care is for existing hospice homecare patients who are not in a crisis, but whose family may need a few days away for a special event or trip away from home. This stay lasts for a maximum of 5 days and is covered as part of the Hospice Medicare/Medicaid benefit.

What is the visitation policy?

Southeastern Hospice House is open for family and friends visitation 24/7. Each patient room has two chairs which each convert to a single bed. Please be aware that sleeping is not allowed in any of the common areas.

Does Southeastern Hospice House accept patients from other agencies?

Yes. All other agencies are more than welcome to place any patient with our facility.

Can outside food be brought in for a patient?

Family and friends are welcome to bring in food to be stored in the family kitchen, as long as it is properly contained and marked with the date that it was prepared or opened. The staff will dispose of food that is unlabeled. It is also permissible to cook in our full-sized kitchen.

Are meals available to visitors?

Each patient is allowed one tray per meal. If the patient is unable or unwilling to eat, a family welcome is welcome to utilize the meal tray.

How much money should be left with the patient?

Patients do not need money. However, any money and valuables that are brought in with the patient will be counted and put in a safe.

Is there telephone access in the room?

Each patient room has an individual phone with a direct dial phone number. All local calls are free, but no long distance calls are permitted.

What personal items should a patient bring with them?

Southeastern Hospice House provides the necessary toiletries for our patients, so the only items you might want to bring from home would that would be meaningful to the patient such as special pictures or mementos. Keep in mind that nothing can be hung on the wall, but there is plenty of shelf space.

Who develops the plan of care for each patient?

he interdisciplinary hospice team, along with the attending physician, will develop and update and individual plan of care for each patient. Southeastern Hospice House care-giving team includes the physician, nurses, certified nursing assistants, a chaplain, a social worker, a pharmacist, a dietitian, and volunteers.

Can pets come to the Hospice House?

Family and visitors can bring in a pet for short visits. Prior notice and approval is required. All pets must be kept under control and leashed, and a certificate of health must be provided prior to visit.

Do patients ever improve enough to leave the Hospice House?

Some of our patients actually do improve! Patients can be discharged when their condition improves or they decide to pursue aggressive, curative treatment. Patients may return home if their personal situation permits or be transferred to a nursing facility that suits their needs.

Where is the Hospice House located?

Southeastern Hospice House is located at 1100 Pine Run Drive, Lumberton, NC just behind WoodHaven and Gibson Cancer Center.
