In October 2011, I was faced with the disease known as Transverse Myelitis. If affects your spinal column and nerves. I had just finished teaching for the day. After I dismissed students I began to feel my legs tingling and my back was in terrible pain. I knew something was terribly wrong. Within one hour I had lost feeling from the waist down. I was paralyzed for one week then intense therapy followed. I began therapy with Southeastern Lifestyle Center for Rehabilitation on December 4.
I was given the Berg Balance test on evaluation day to determine how I score in relation to my balance. I feel that my balance has improved dramatically with the exercises I have been given. I’m so excited to be walking! It is a great feeling to not use the walker and get around with guide walkers (good friends) that assist me.
Beverly (Physical Therapist) is constantly challenging me to try new exercises and gives me positive feedback...she acts like she truly cares about me.
The BEST thing about treatment is that it is totally individualized with the patient in mind. My determination and the power of prayer have seen me through this challenging time in my life.
