UNC Health Southeastern offers full-service heart, thoracic, and vascular procedures, including:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts (CABG), a surgery that can improve blood flow to the heart by providing a new route, or “bypass”, around a section of blocked or diseased arteries
  • Valve surgery, repair and replacement of cardiac valves
  • Thoracic surgical procedures for treatment of diseases of the chest and lungs, such as removal of lung cancers or chest masses
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), a non-surgical procedure in which several methods may be employed to clear blockages in the coronary arteries, allowing blood to flow normally. Some of the more common methods include:
    • Angioplasty, where a balloon-tipped catheter is inserted into a blocked or narrowed artery and inflated to clear the blockage
    • Stent placement (including drug-eluting types), where a tiny cage-like structure helps keep open arteries cleared by angioplasty
    • Coronary atherectomy, where plaque is removed from inside an artery using a special burr or drill on the tip of a catheter that rotates to shave the plaque into tiny pieces
  • Insertion of permanent pacemakers
  • Comprehensive vascular services including:
    • Bypass surgery for peripheral artery disease (PAD), a surgery to reroute the blood supply around a blocked artery in your legs
    • Endovascular therapy for peripheral artery disease (PAD), minimally invasive procedures that are done inside the blood vessels that have become narrowed or blocked with plaque over time – a condition known as atherosclerosis.
    • Carotid endarterectomy, a surgical procedure to open and clean the carotid artery with goal of stroke prevention
    • Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), a procedure to repair an aneurysm of the aorta
    • Laser treatment of varicose veins, where a laser fiber is passed through a thin catheter into the vein to close the varicose vein
    • Hemodialysis access, a surgical procedure to create vascular access for patients needing hemodialysis
